Do I Need to Visit the US to Open a Business Bank Account?
Published 3 September 2026 · Reviewed by Ashfaq Khattak, US Tax Consultant
No. Several US financial institutions onboard non-resident-owned companies entirely online, with no branch visit and no US travel. What they need is your company documents, your EIN, and identification for every beneficial owner. What they will not do is skip verification because you are abroad.
What you will be asked for
- Formation documents — the filed Articles or Certificate, stamped by the state.
- Your EIN confirmation, the CP 575 notice, or an acceptable substitute.
- An operating agreement showing who owns what. This is where home-made single-member agreements fail: they often do not say enough.
- Passport and proof of address for every beneficial owner, under know-your-customer rules.
- A plausible account of the business — what it does, who pays it, roughly how much. Vagueness here is the most common reason a remote application is declined.
Why applications get refused
- A mismatch between documents. The company name on the state filing, the EIN letter and the application must agree exactly, punctuation included.
- An address nobody can verify. A borrowed address or a mail drop the provider recognises as one.
- A country the provider does not serve. This is about your residence, not your company, and it varies by provider — a refusal from one is not a refusal from all.
- An unclear business description. "Consulting" is not a business description. What you sell, to whom, and how you get paid, is.
Traditional banks versus fintech providers
Established retail banks generally still want a US person present or a US address with a track record. Newer business banking providers were built for remote onboarding and are where most non-resident founders end up. The trade is convenience against the branch relationship you would not have used anyway.
Two things to check before you apply anywhere: whether deposits are held at an insured institution, and whether the provider serves your country of residence. Our page on US banks for non-resident LLCs covers the current landscape, and our banking setup service prepares the documents in the form each provider expects.
Nobody can guarantee an account. Any service promising approval is promising something the bank decides.
Frequently asked questions
Can I open a US business bank account without visiting the United States?
Yes. Several US financial providers onboard non-resident-owned companies entirely online, with no branch visit and no travel. They need your filed formation documents, your EIN confirmation, an operating agreement, and passport and proof of address for every beneficial owner.
Why do remote bank applications get declined?
Four common reasons: the company name differing between the state filing, the EIN letter and the application; an address the provider recognises as a mail drop; a country of residence the provider does not serve; and a business description too vague to assess.
Will a traditional US bank open an account for a non-resident remotely?
Established retail banks generally still want a US person present or a US address with a track record. Newer business banking providers were built for remote onboarding and are where most non-resident founders end up.
Can anyone guarantee that my account will be approved?
No. The bank decides. Any service promising approval is promising something that is not theirs to promise.
