Do I Need a US Address to Form an LLC?
Published 3 September 2026 · Reviewed by Ashfaq Khattak, US Tax Consultant
You do not need a US address of your own. You do need a registered agent with a physical street address in your formation state, and that is what satisfies the state’s requirement. Your own address on the filing can be your home address in any country.
Three different addresses, often confused
| Address | Required? | Must be in the US? |
|---|---|---|
| Registered agent address | Yes, by law | Yes — physical street address in the formation state |
| Principal business address | Usually yes on the filing | No — your address abroad is fine in most states |
| Mailing address for IRS post | Practically, yes | Strongly preferred, because the IRS writes rather than emails |
Only the first has a legal requirement to be American, and your agent provides it.
Why you probably want a US mailing address anyway
- The IRS communicates on paper. Your EIN confirmation, any notice, any query — all posted. International forwarding is slow and notices carry deadlines.
- Banks and processors look. A US address is not a requirement everywhere, but it removes friction in onboarding.
- Your home address stays private. Otherwise it appears on invoices, your website and any public filing.
What a mailing address is not is a substitute for the registered agent. No state accepts a PO box or a mail-forwarding address for that role. The distinction is set out on our registered agent vs virtual address page.
A warning about borrowed addresses
Using a friend’s US address, or an address you have no connection to, causes problems that arrive later: banks verify addresses, a mismatch between your filed address and your bank record triggers review, and post that matters goes to somebody who is not expecting it.
Use an address you control. It costs less than the account review it prevents.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need a US address to form an LLC?
Not one of your own. The state requires a registered agent with a physical street address in the formation state, and your agent provides that. Your own principal address on the filing can be your home address in any country.
Should I get a US mailing address anyway?
Usually yes. The IRS communicates on paper — your EIN confirmation and any notice arrive by post, carrying deadlines — and international forwarding is slow. It also keeps your home address off your invoices, website and public filings.
Can I use a friend’s US address?
It causes problems later. Banks verify addresses, a mismatch between your filed address and your bank record triggers review, and post that matters goes to someone who is not expecting it. Use an address you control.
